It takes longer to recover between hard training sessions as we age. Our body can still adapt to training loads however it takes longer for our bodies to process the changes - mostly muscle breakdown and repair.
Most recovery products focus on Energy replacement with a 3:1 Carb to Protein ratio. As we age we need to shift the focus to muscle repair and this means changing the ratio. Elivar Recover uses a 1:1 ratio of Carbs to Protein - giving you 60% more protein We also use a blend of fast-release whey and slow-release casein to ensure that your body has essential muscle repairing proteins available over a longer period than with just whey alone.
As you get older you become more sensitive to changes in blood sugar. Ideally we should have stable blood sugar levels – insulin is released as part of the process of regulating our blood sugar. This is why, for example, people who suffer from diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels manually. Their system can’t, or won’t release sufficient insulin. As we age we should avoid rapid rises in blood sugar levels. However most sports nutrition energy products include high glycaemic index (GI) sugars, such as fructose or sucrose as the primary energy source carbohydrates.
Elivar has developed formulations for its sports nutrition products which avoid the traditional high glycaemic index (GI) sugars, fructose and sucrose. We use isomaltulose as our primary energy source. It’s a low glycaemic index (GI) sugar which offers a slower, more controlled release of energy.
Muscle loss is a known side effect of ageing and begins as early as your thirties. It gets harder to build and maintain muscle mass - an effect known as Sarcopenia. At the same time, total body fat and visceral fat tend to increase.
Weight bearing exercise is the only way to slow the onset of age-related muscle loss. It provides a natural stimulus to our muscles which can help slow the rate of decline but it needs to be supported by the correct amount of protein intake.
