THE HARDEST ROAD HOME RAISES OVER £500,000 FOR SPORT RELIEF

Elivar Sports Nutrition Expert Prof Greg Whyte Supports Zoe Ball on Sports Relief’s Hardest Road Home Challenge.

Zoe took on the challenge to raise money for Sport Relief and raise awareness of mental health by highlighting how Sport Relief cash helps support mental health projects across the UK.

Zoe Ball pushed herself to the limit with a gruelling five-day cycle challenge, in BT Sport Relief Challenge: Zoe’s Hardest Road Home.

 

Ahead of her challenge Zoe visited The Tomorrow Project, which has been set up to support individuals and communities to prevent suicide. The Tomorrow Project is managed by Harmless, an organisation that provides support to people who are at risk of self-harm; their friends, families and professionals.

Since 2006, Greg has applied his sports science work to assist various celebrities in completing some of the toughest challenges. Greg has trained, motivated and successfully coached 26 Sport and Comic Relief Challenges including: the comedian David Walliams to swim across the English Channel the Gibraltar Straits and the length of the Thames; James Cracknell to run, cycle and swim to Africa; a team of 9 celebrities including Cheryl Cole, Chris Moyles and Gary Barlow to climb Mt. Since 1985, Comic Relief has raised over £1 billion. That money has helped, and is helping, people living incredible tough lives.

Add 5 Years to Your Life: How Endurance and Outdoor Sports Boost Longevity

In the quest for a longer, healthier life, recent studies have found an encouraging connection between endurance and outdoor sports and longevity. One of these studies, conducted by the International Longevity Centre UK, analysed Commonwealth Games competitor records dating back to 1930. The study revealed that top-level athletes can live up to five years longer than the general population, with men's longevity boosted most by 24% - 29% in case of aquatic, track and indoor sports, which translates to between 4.5 and 5.3 extra years of life. Women experienced a 22% increase in longevity across all sports categories equating to 3.9 extra years of life.
